Former Governor of Anambra State, Mr Willie Obiano, has reported died in London, the United Kingdom.

According to reports, the politician passed away after a battle with an illness believed to be cancer.

He was said to have suffered from “severe heart failure and complications related to urinary cancer,” with his health declining in the past months.

It was reported that Mr Obiano had been receiving intensive care at the hospital in London before his condition worsened.

The deceased was born on August 8, 1955. He hailed from Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area. He studied Accounting at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) before beginning his banking career, eventually becoming a top executive at Fidelity Bank.

He became the Governor of Anambra State after the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, finished his tenure as Governor of the same state.

He was succeeded by the current Governor of Anambra State, Mr Charles Soludo, who secured a second term in office last weekend.
