The Senate Adhoc Committee on South-East/North East of the Senate National Security Summit 2025 has expressed its commitment to restoring peace and security in the South East region of Nigeria. Senator Austin Akobundu, the committee’s chairman, made this declaration during a security summit held in Enugu, which focused on enhancing Nigeria’s national security architecture through innovation, collaboration, and resilience.
The summit brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including traditional and religious leaders, community representatives, security agencies, and civil society organizations. Akobundu emphasized the National Assembly’s role in fostering inter-agency collaboration among security forces and assured that necessary resources would be allocated and released promptly to support efforts aimed at restoring peace and prosperity in the region.
He acknowledged the contributions of various stakeholders in combating insecurity and called for continued collaboration to achieve collective goals. Akobundu highlighted the ongoing challenges posed by non-state actors, which have resulted in significant socio-economic ramifications, including trauma, displacement, and disruptions to education and agriculture.
The chairman pointed out that the persistent insecurity has severely impacted the region’s academic performance and economic stability, particularly due to the enforcement of sit-at-home orders and violence by certain groups.
In his remarks, the Speaker of the Enugu House of Assembly, Mr. Uche Ugwu, underscored the summit’s importance as a platform for dialogue and collaboration among various sectors to address the root causes of insecurity in the South East. He called for sincere and courageous efforts from all parties involved, emphasizing the need for partnerships between governments, communities, security agencies, and civil society to effectively tackle the pressing issues of insecurity.
