The Edo State Government has pledged to enhance its road infrastructure to alleviate the difficulties faced by residents due to deteriorating sections of major Federal Highways. This commitment was emphasized by the Commissioner for Works, Hon. (Dr.) Felix Akhabue, during his inspection of the ongoing construction on the Benin-Sapele Road.
Dr. Akhabue stated that the initiative is in response to directives from Governor Sen. Monday Okpebholo, who has instructed the Ministry of Works to expedite road construction during the dry season. Currently, over 200 kilometers of roads are under construction across the state. The Governor has taken proactive measures by awarding contracts to two construction companies for sections of the Benin-Sapele Road, aiming for timely completion, especially with the holiday season approaching.
“The Governor believes in positively impacting the lives of his constituents, and this is being achieved through the Ministry of Works by constructing roads throughout the state. Both state and federal roads are being addressed, as they serve not only federal users but also the people of Edo,” Dr. Akhabue remarked. He added that palliative measures are being implemented on severely damaged areas to ease traffic while major construction continues.
The decision to assign the Benin-Sapele Road Project to CCECC and CBC was made to ensure the project is completed on schedule. Additionally, the Commissioner highlighted that improvements on the Benin-Ekpoma-Auchi road have significantly reduced travel times and risks associated with previously failed sections, enhancing the overall travel experience for commuters.
