The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended a 43-year-old man, Kalu Okafor, suspected of kidnapping and linked to a banned secessionist group. The arrest occurred during an intelligence-led operation by the Rapid Response Squad in the Okpoko area of Ogbaru Local Government Area early Wednesday morning.

According to police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga, the operation was prompted by a confession from another gang member, Chukwudi Nwakpa, who revealed that Okafor was responsible for storing firearms used in their kidnapping activities. During the operation, law enforcement officials recovered significant weaponry, including an AK-47 rifle, a pump-action gun, two AK-47 magazines, and 88 rounds of ammunition, along with face masks and gloves.

Ikenga’s statement highlighted that Okafor not only safeguarded the firearms but also admitted to receiving a share of the ransom money collected from victims. He is currently cooperating with police investigations to help apprehend other gang members and recover additional weapons.

This arrest follows a recent operation where another suspected member of the same secessionist group, Emmanuel Osuigwe, was detained in Ozubulu. These actions are part of increased security measures and raids initiated by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, aimed at combating crime in the state. Further updates on the situation are expected.
