In demonstration of its policy of inclusion for all segments of the State’s population, the Edo State Government through its Office of the First Lady has empowered 250 persons with disabilities (PWDs) each with cash grants of N200,000, under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu as part of activities commemorating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
During the empowerment programme which held at the New Festival Hall of the Government House in Benin City, the Executive Governor of Edo State, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, emphasized the importance of supporting PWDs. He noted that they are God’s creation and should not face discrimination, and highlighting the State’s commitment to their welfare. He announced the donation of a bus to the Community, consolidating the State’s dedication to valuing and supporting vulnerable populations.

In the address of Sen. Tinubu as delivered by the Coordinator, Office of the Edo State First Lady and State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani; She stated that the programme was being launched simultaneously across all states in the Federation, including the Federal Capital Territory.
Sen. Tinubu assured that RHI is committed to inclusivity and empowerment for Nigerians with disabilities. She disclosed that the programme covered the disbursement of N200,000 grants to 9,500 individuals to strengthen small businesses in alignment with the President Bola Tinubu’s vision for inclusive prosperity. She added that the initiative aims to promote economic independence and support vulnerable populations, particularly on the International Day of People Living with Disabilities.

In her words, “Our social investment programmes have provided financial and material supports to victims of flood, communal clashes, and disaster, as well as to the elderly, widows, and the orphans of our fallen heroes. Through the Renewed Hope Initiative Monthly Food Outreach Scheme, we have so far delivered food items to 22 states and the FCT. We have also provided food items to internally displaced persons and other vulnerable communities. We remain committed to doing even more to uplift lives and bring hope to those in need.”
Sen. Tinubu concluded that the RHI’s Governing Board has made economic empowerment programmes for PWDs an annual event, to be held on 3rd December annually to encourage beneficiaries to utilize the opportunity to grow their businesses and sustain their families.
Mrs. Anani called on government officials to consider people living with disabilities in employment, education, and infrastructure, emphasizing their capabilities and strengths. She raised concerns about the vulnerability of PWDs to sexual assault and gender-based violence, advocating the need for special care and support services, including accessible healthcare and communication facilities for concerned persons.
The Secretary to the Edo State Government, Barr. Umar Musa Ikhilor, reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to inclusivity. He advocated the establishment of a commission for PWDs, noting that the initiative of the Sen. Okpebholos administration aims to promote the welfare and inclusion of PWDs in the society.

The Executive Director of the Network for the Advancement of Persons with Visible Disabilities, NAPVID, Melody Omosah Esq. appreciated the Governor for his continuous support for the establishment and the sustainability of the Commission for PWDs, and for including PWDs in Government programmes, marking a first-time personal engagement with the Community.
Barr. Omosah highlighted the resilience and capabilities of people with disabilities, emphasizing their desire for opportunities, education, and a level playing field. He stressed that they want to contribute to society and should be defined by their capabilities, not disabilities. He called on stakeholders to prioritize inclusion and empowerment, recognizing the dignity, competence, and contributions of PWDs to societal growth.

Some beneficiaries including a widow and Visually Impaired Security Education Teacher at Idia College in Benin City, Mrs. Glory Inegbenehi, expressed gratitude for the economic empowerment and pledged to use the grant wisely on profitable business instead of wasting it on unprofitable ventures.
