Operatives from the Edo State Taskforce have successfully dismantled a three-man kidnap syndicate operating in Benin City, rescuing a young woman who had been held captive. The suspects—James Ehigator from Uromi, Atiku Muhammad from Suleja, and Osas Iwagbonsoria from Ekpoma—were apprehended during a routine patrol while transporting the victim in an Audi vehicle.

Commissioner for Security and Public Safety, Hon. Festus Ebea, stated that this operation underscores the commitment of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration to eliminate criminal networks throughout Edo State. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among security agencies, including the Edo State Security Corps, to enhance intelligence sharing and employ advanced surveillance techniques to combat crime effectively.

The government has been providing substantial logistical support to security forces, particularly as the festive season approaches, to ensure the safety of residents. Hon. Ebea cautioned the public to remain vigilant and avoid interactions with strangers who may attempt to deceive them.

The Taskforce acted on intelligence regarding suspicious activities in the Upper Mission Extension area, leading to the interception of the vehicle. During the stop, operatives discovered items linked to the syndicate’s criminal activities. The suspects are currently being profiled and will be handed over to the relevant security agencies for further investigation and prosecution.

The rescued victim, who chose to remain anonymous, recounted that she was misled into entering the vehicle by one of the suspects who pretended to seek directions. CSP Michael Anetor, Commander of the Edo State Taskforce, noted that the operatives’ suspicions during the patrol led to the discovery of inconsistencies in the suspects’ stories, prompting further investigation.

This operation is seen as a significant advancement in the state’s ongoing battle against kidnapping and related crimes. The Edo State Government has reiterated its warning to criminals to cease their activities or face the consequences, assuring residents of continued security measures to maintain safety for law-abiding citizens.
