The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has urged Nigerians to prioritise their health and safety this festive season by making responsible, drug-free choices.

In a Christmas message posted on its X page on Thursday, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd) extended warm wishes to all Nigerians and to the officers of the NDLEA for their dedication in safeguarding communities from drug abuse.

“Your dedication and sacrifice in protecting our communities from drug abuse are deeply appreciated,” Marwa said.

He appealed to the general public to use the holiday period to make healthy decisions, free from the influence of drugs.

Together, we can build a safer, healthier, and more prosperous Nigeria. Wishing you all a peaceful, joyous, and drug-free Christmas,” he added.

The appeal comes against a backdrop of concerning drug use trends in Nigeria.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, World Drug Report 2025, the national prevalence of drug use stands at 14.4%, nearly three times the global average, affecting an estimated 14.3 million people aged 15-64.

The NDLEA boss emphasised that public vigilance and personal responsibility remain critical to reducing drug-related harm and promoting community wellbeing during the festive celebrations.
