The Edo State Government on Monday donated Lassa fever response kits to the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH) as part of sustained efforts to strengthen disease management and ease the growing financial burden on the hospital.

I led the donation on behalf of His Excellency, Governor Monday Okpebholo, in recognition of ISTH’s critical role and global reputation in the management and treatment of Lassa fever. This intervention underscores the commitment of the Edo State Government to public health preparedness and support for frontline health institutions.

The event was attended by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Paul Eighemhenrio, directors from the ministry, and members of staff of the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital.

While presenting the items, I reiterated that the state government remains fully committed to supporting ISTH, which has remained a reference centre for Lassa fever treatment not only in Nigeria but internationally. I noted that the donation was a proactive response aimed at strengthening the hospital’s capacity to manage the increasing number of cases.

The items were received by the Chief Medical Director of ISTH, Dr. Reuben Eifediyi, who was represented by Dr. Joseph Okoeguale. He expressed deep appreciation to the Edo State Government for the swift intervention following the hospital’s report on the rising burden of Lassa fever cases. He disclosed that about 60 confirmed patients are currently on admission, with several suspected cases awaiting laboratory confirmation. According to him, the cost of treating a single Lassa fever patient can approach one million naira, making the support from the state government both timely and impactful.

The donated items include 50 Lassa fever test kits, 100 protective coveralls, 200 isolation gowns, hand sanitizers, medications, and other essential medical supplies. The donation is expected to significantly boost the hospital’s response capacity and improve patient care outcomes.

The Edo State Government, under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo, remains resolute in prioritizing the health and well-being of Edo people through strategic support for critical healthcare institutions and disease control initiatives.
