The recent comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Nigeria have sparked significant backlash from various Nigerian leaders and organizations. Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin criticized Trump for labeling Nigeria as a “disgraced country” and for threatening military action in response to violence against Christians. Jibrin described Trump’s statements as “un-American” and a violation of international law, emphasizing that diplomatic issues should be addressed through established channels, such as the United Nations.

Jibrin’s remarks were echoed by the Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF) and the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), both of which condemned Trump’s comments and warned against foreign interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs. NEF spokesperson Prof. Abubakar Jiddere stated that Nigeria is not an extension of the United States and criticized Trump’s approach as a violation of international treaties. He also highlighted the negative consequences of U.S. interventions in other countries, arguing that Nigeria is capable of managing its own challenges.

MACBAN’s National President, Alhaji Baba Othman-Ngelzarma, rejected allegations linking the association to violations of religious freedom, calling them baseless and politically motivated. He expressed concern over the serious nature of the allegations coming from the U.S. Congress and emphasized the need for respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Overall, the reactions from Nigerian leaders underscore a strong sentiment against perceived external interference and a call for respect for Nigeria’s autonomy in handling its own affairs.
