Edo Govt. Clears Kiosks Under High Tension For Safer Trading

The Edo State Government, through the Edo State Development and Building Control Agency, has reaffirmed its dedication to enforcing urban planning regulations and reclaiming public spaces to ensure a safer and more orderly environment for development. This commitment was highlighted by the Managing Director of the Agency, Hon. Igabali Darlington Imoisili, during a recent demolition exercise in Etete, Benin City.

The demolition targeted structures such as caravans, shops, and buildings constructed directly beneath high-tension electricity lines. Hon. Igabali was joined by Directors from the Agency and officials from the Edo State Parks and Garden Agency during the operation.

In discussions with journalists, Hon. Igabali expressed gratitude to the State Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, for his ongoing efforts to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the State and promote public safety. He raised concerns about the deterioration of the once peaceful corridor, which has become overrun with unauthorized commercial activities and has served as a hideout for criminal elements.

“This corridor is not a place where people should do business or reside. It is unsafe due to the high-tension wires, which pose serious health risks from radiation. Anything can happen here, and lives could be lost. To prevent such hazards, these structures must be removed,” Hon. Igabali stated. He noted that the illegal occupants had ignored multiple eviction notices, prompting the Agency to take action after the notices expired. He urged anyone still living or trading under power lines across the State to vacate immediately, emphasizing that the demolition efforts will continue until all affected areas are addressed.

Pastor Stanley Ighodaro, the Managing Director of the Edo State Parks and Garden Agency, assured the public that the cleared areas will be transformed as part of the State’s environmental sustainability initiative. He revealed plans to green and beautify the entire stretch once the reclamation exercise is complete, further demonstrating the State Government’s commitment to improving urban living conditions.
