On the night of December 12-13, 2025, troops from Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) successfully repelled a coordinated attack by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Mairari, Borno State. The assault involved attempts to breach the base using two Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs), which were promptly detected and neutralized by the troops, preventing any penetration into the base.

Lt Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer for the Joint Task Force North East, confirmed the details in a statement. He highlighted that the operation involved coordinated ground and air efforts, resulting in significant losses for the terrorists, including several fatalities and injuries among their ranks. Surveillance footage and field reports corroborated the effectiveness of the troops’ response.

In the aftermath of the attack, OPHK troops, supported by the Theatre Command Quick Reaction Group, the Nigeria Police Crack Team, and the Civilian Joint Task Force, conducted a thorough search of the area. This operation led to the discovery of numerous casualties among the terrorists and the seizure of a variety of weapons and supplies that were abandoned during their retreat. Recovered items included AK-47 rifles, ammunition, hand grenades, motorcycles, and medical supplies, which further diminished the terrorists’ operational capabilities.

The two VBIEDs involved in the attack were destroyed by OPHK defensive fire, causing damage along the road but ensuring that the FOB remained secure. Lt Colonel Uba emphasized that there was no breach of the base, underscoring the troops’ preparedness and resilience. He reassured the local communities of the ongoing security presence and the commitment of the troops to defeat terrorist elements and restore peace in the North East region.

The statement concluded by reaffirming the operational readiness and professionalism of the military personnel involved in Operation Hadin Kai, which continues to focus on protecting civilians and disrupting terrorist networks in the area.
