Bello Turji, a notorious bandit leader, has made serious allegations against two former governors of Zamfara and Sokoto states, accusing them of exacerbating insecurity in the region. In a recent viral video, Turji claimed that past political leadership laid the groundwork for the ongoing violence by arming vigilante groups known as ‘Yan Banga,’ which he alleged targeted Fulani communities, thereby escalating conflict.

Turji denied receiving any financial inducements, specifically refuting claims made by Musa Kamarawa, a former peace negotiator, who alleged that Turji was paid N30 million for his involvement in peace talks with the Zamfara State government. He insisted that his actions were not motivated by personal gain or political influence, emphasizing that he was not backed by any political entity.

The response from the former governors has been muted, with attempts to reach them for comment proving unsuccessful. Sources close to the governors dismissed Turji’s statements, suggesting that his words should not be taken seriously given his criminal background. They characterized his claims as attempts to portray himself as a victim.

The Nigerian military and security agencies have classified Turji as one of the most dangerous leaders of armed groups in the North-West, having previously issued a wanted notice for his involvement in terror-related activities. Despite his assertions of innocence and claims of a lack of financial support, the ongoing cycle of violence in the region continues to pose significant challenges for security forces and the government.
