Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, recently addressed concerns regarding the management of public funds in the state. During the commissioning of the 14.2-kilometre Obodhi–Ozochi Road, he claimed that his administration found over N600 billion in state coffers when emergency rule ended, asserting a commitment to prudent financial management. Fubara noted that before the emergency rule was declared, his administration had left approximately N300 billion in government accounts.

His comments came in response to criticisms from Martin Amaewhule, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, who raised concerns about the conditions of public schools in the state and the utilization of funds by the immediate past Sole Administrator, Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd). Amaewhule highlighted the poor state of Township State School 1 in Port Harcourt, which lacked basic facilities, and questioned the government’s handling of the available funds.

In his response, Fubara emphasized that all state funds are being used responsibly and that his administration’s expenditure records are transparent and verifiable. He stated that his government would provide detailed accounts of public fund utilization within six months, attributing some criticisms to a lack of visible project completions due to their preference for completing projects before commissioning them.

Fubara acknowledged that the Obodhi–Ozochi Road project was initiated by his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, and expressed his administration’s commitment to expanding its scope. He also encouraged community members to support President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 elections, linking local development efforts to broader political mobilization.
