On November 23, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu issued a directive to withdraw police officers who have been providing security for VIPs across Nigeria, reallocating them to address broader security challenges facing the country. This decision means that VIPs will now have to request armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) instead of relying on police officers for their security needs.

During a joint session of the National Assembly following the presentation of the 2026 budget, Senate President Godswill Akpabio raised concerns regarding the safety of federal lawmakers in light of the police withdrawal. He expressed that some lawmakers felt vulnerable and might not feel secure returning home without adequate protection. Akpabio appealed to President Tinubu to reconsider the decision, highlighting the potential risks faced by members of the National Assembly.

Despite these concerns, Akpabio acknowledged the economic reforms initiated by the Tinubu administration since he took office on May 29, 2023, noting that these reforms are beginning to yield positive results. He expressed confidence in the government’s direction and assured Nigerians of a more prosperous future, emphasizing the National Assembly’s readiness to support the administration in its efforts.
