Police to Discipline Officer Caught Extorting Motorcyclist

The Nigeria Police Force has ordered one of its officers, caught on a viral video allegedly extorting a motorcyclist, to report to Force Headquarters for disciplinary proceedings.

The force also called for the officer’s Divisional Police Officer to report for possible sanction.

The incident, captured in a video widely circulating on Sunday, shows a uniformed officer, reportedly in Cross River State, stopping a motorcyclist on the roadside and demanding cash.

The footage depicts the officer counting the money while the motorcyclist appears reluctant.

In a Sunday statement posted on X by the Police Complaint Response Unit (@PoliceNG_CRU), the force confirmed the authenticity of the video and announced immediate action.

The Force high command has sent for the DPO and officer seen in this viral video to report to the Police Force Headquarters, Abuja, for disciplinary actions accordingly. #NoToImpunity,” the post read.

This case comes amid ongoing concerns about systemic bribery and misconduct among police officers.

the Ogun State Police Command launched an investigation into a viral video showing a truck driver in Ijebu-Ode claiming he was pursued and assaulted by men impersonating members of the Police Force.

The driver alleged that the attackers, who identified themselves as members of a task force, chased him around 4 a.m., damaging his vehicle and threatening his life.

Responding, the Ogun State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer Oluseyi Babaseyi, clarified in a statement released on Sunday that the men involved are not officers of the Nigerian Police Force.
