Tension gripped the Bodija area of Ibadan on Saturday as suspected political thugs attacked the residence of a former deputy governor of Oyo State, Hazeem Gbolarumi.
The incident occurred as a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, commenced its local government congresses across the country.
Sources said that in addition to the attack on Gbolarumi’s residence, political thugs also stormed venues where the congresses were taking place across several local government areas of the state.
The attacks reportedly occurred while the congresses were underway, leaving several participants injured and vehicles vandalised.
It was gathered that no fewer than 10 people were assaulted during the incidents, while a number of vehicles were damaged.
Chairman of the faction loyal to Wike in the state, Abdulrahman Akinoso, confirmed the development when contacted.
Speaking in a telephone conversation, Akinoso said several people were attacked and many vehicles vandalised during the disruptions.
He added that the incidents were reported in local government areas including Ibadan North, Ogbomoso North, Ibarapa Central and Akinyele.
Prof Akinoso said, “Our local government congresses were attacked across Oyo state. Ibadan North, Ogbomoso South, Igboora (Ibarapa Central) Akinyele.
Three vehicles were deatroyed in Ibadan North, they also attacked Gbolarumi House at Aare Avenue Bodija.
“About ten people have been injured in the various attacks across the state.
“There may be a need to upgrade the damages. More than 25 vehicles have been reported damaged across various locations.
The thugs are moving round the local governments, attacking individuals at home, damaging buildings and unleashing mayhem”
Akinoso noted that thugs are moving round to unleash terror on the people.
At Gbolarumi’s residence about eight vehicles were destroyed as the suspected hoodlums throw stones and other dangerous objects into the building from outside.
