Edo Assembly Invites Obaseki, Others For Questioning on MOWAA, Radisson

The Edo State House of Assembly’s ad hoc committee is actively investigating the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) and the Radisson Hotel project, both of which were initiated during the tenure of former Governor Godwin Obaseki. The committee has summoned Obaseki, along with several former officials and stakeholders involved in these projects, to appear for questioning on December 4.

The committee’s inquiry focuses on the funding structure of the Radisson Hotel project, which is nearing completion, while the first phase of the MOWAA has already been completed. The investigation comes in the wake of a chaotic incident on November 9, when protesters disrupted a private preview event at the museum, claiming ownership rights for the Oba of Benin. This incident led to concerns about the safety of foreign dignitaries present at the event, including ambassadors from various countries.

The statement from the committee’s secretary, Bekisu Oshone, emphasizes the importance of the summoned individuals’ testimonies for the ongoing probe. The list of invitees includes key figures such as the former Commissioner for Finance, the former Attorney General, and various managing directors of companies involved in the projects.

This investigation highlights ongoing tensions and issues surrounding the management and ownership of cultural projects in Edo State, as well as the implications of such developments for local governance and community relations.
