The Edo State Government has initiated the demolition of properties linked to cult activities in Uromi, located in the Esan North-East Local Government Area, as part of a broader strategy to combat crime, including kidnapping and cultism. This decision was announced by Chief Press Secretary Patrick Ebojele, who indicated that the demolitions follow a significant raid conducted on November 17 by the State’s Special Security Squad, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies.

During this operation, 31 suspects were apprehended at various locations, including leaders of the Black Axe and Eiye confraternities, who were implicated in a violent clash in Uromi on November 16. After issuing a seven-day ultimatum for these leaders to surrender, which went unheeded, the government proceeded with demolishing buildings where incriminating evidence was found.

The demolition operation was spearheaded by the Principal Security Officer to Governor Monday Okpebholo, with support from local police, vigilante groups, and military personnel. Coordinator of the security outfit, Idemudia Noah, emphasized that this action serves as a warning to landlords and property owners to vet their tenants carefully, as these properties were demolished due to the evidence linking them to criminal activities.

Noah reiterated the administration’s commitment to eradicating cultism and criminality in Edo State, asserting that no one is above the law. Additionally, in a related operation, the security squad raided the Hausa quarters in Uromi, arresting 15 individuals in connection with drug-related offenses. The suspects were found with illicit drugs and have been transferred to the Uromi Divisional Headquarters for further investigation and prosecution.

The crackdown on drug peddling was highlighted as a significant factor contributing to the rise of criminal activities in the area, with one arrested suspect, Tajudeen Lawal, admitting to his involvement in drug sales. The government’s actions reflect a determined effort to restore safety and order in the region.
