Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has ordered the closure of Our Lady Apostle Secondary School in Ijebu-Ode following a gas leak incident that affected students. Initially, 30 students were hospitalized after inhaling gas, suspected to have come from nearby carbide cylinders, causing widespread panic in the community.
State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, confirmed that the affected students were promptly taken to the General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode for medical attention. While many were stabilized and some discharged, 18 additional students later reported feeling unwell after returning home, prompting further medical evaluations.
In a statement, Oresanya detailed that safety officers utilized a gas analyzer to identify the leak’s source, and investigations are ongoing with the involvement of various security and health agencies. The state government has established a situation room at the General Hospital to offer free treatment for affected individuals. The governor’s decision to close the school serves as a precautionary measure while investigations continue.
