The Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) has clarified that it is not in conflict with the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, emphasizing that it has not encroached upon the monarch’s jurisdiction. This statement comes in light of a lawsuit filed by Chief Osaro Idah, the Obazelu of Benin Kingdom, along with the Ogbakha-Edo and the Aiguobasimwin Movement, which seeks to halt what they describe as an unlawful and destabilizing attempt to undermine the authority of the Oba.
Counsel for MOWAA, Olayiwola Afolabi, addressed the situation in Benin City, stating that the organization is not challenging the Oba’s authority and believes there is no basis for the lawsuit. Afolabi mentioned that MOWAA has filed a preliminary objection to the suit, arguing that Chief Idah lacks the legal standing to bring the case.
He also indicated a willingness to engage in discussions to resolve any misunderstandings, noting that the lawyers involved have agreed to reconvene in February to explore potential resolutions. Afolabi stressed the importance of amicable resolution, highlighting that the project is beneficial for all parties involved and has significant economic potential.
Regarding MOWAA’s refusal to appear before an Edo Assembly Investigative Committee, Afolabi asserted that the ongoing court case takes precedence over any assembly proceedings. He stated that the Assembly does not have the authority to adjudicate matters that are already before the court, emphasizing the separation of powers between legislative and judicial branches.
In conclusion, Afolabi expressed a desire for cooperation and dialogue to address any issues surrounding MOWAA, advocating for a peaceful resolution to avoid conflict in Edo State.
