The Anambra State Internal Revenue Service has arrested five persons for engaging in illegal revenue collection in Nnewi.

The suspects identified as Edwin Okonkwo, Sunny Obasi, Christian Oziri, Christian Chinedu, and Nnamdi Nworie, were apprehended while collecting money ranging from N300 ro N500 from tricycle riders at different locations in Nnewi.

Parading the suspects in Awka on Saturday, the AIRS Special Commander, Nathan Obikwelu, said the suspects contravened Anambra State Government’s law banning illegal revenue collection from tricycle riders and commercial bus operators.

Obikwelu added that the arrest was in line with the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo’s directive against illegal revenue collectors.

He said, “The suspects – Edwin Okonkwo, Sunny Obasi, Christian Oziri, Christian Chinedu, and Nnamdi Nworie – were apprehended while collecting money ranging from three hundred to five hundred naira from tricycle riders at different locations in Nnewi.

“The state government condemned the act in its entirety and assured that the suspects would be charged in court, where they would be remanded in prison.

“The arrests were in line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s directive that illegal cash collections must stop in Anambra State.

The suspects also contravened Anambra State Government law banning illegal revenue collection from tricycle riders and commercial bus operators.”

Anambra Internal Revenue Service had also arrested four persons for engaging in illegal revenue collection in Onitsha.

The suspects identified as Ikenna Udoji, Kosi Iwobi, Chidera Ogbogu and Monday were arrested while collecting money ranging from one thousand, two hundred naira from keke riders opposite Army Gate.
