The Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation into the gruesome murder of a woman following an attack by suspected armed hoodlums in Port Harcourt.
The incident, which occurred on March 19, 2026, was reported by Miss Divine Anyanwu of No. 9 Aliobi Drive, Elimgbu, at the Abuloma Police Division on March 21 at about 4:30 p.m.
According to the police in a press release signed by the spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, Anyanwu and her friend, identified simply as Special Bensington, had boarded a Bolt ride from a hotel located on Emmanuel Road, off Odili Road, when they were attacked.
Iringe-Koko explained that while en route along the Total Gospel area, also off Odili Road, the victims were trailed and ambushed by unknown gunmen operating a tricycle.
She added that the assailants opened fire on them, leaving one of the occupants with severe gunshot injuries.
She further explained that the injured victim was immediately rushed to the BMH Hospital in Port Harcourt for treatment but was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor on duty on March 21.
She said: “Following the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Abuloma Division led a team of officers to the scene of the incident and the hospital as part of preliminary investigations.
“The deceased has since been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy.”
Iringe-Koko disclosed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a discreet forensic investigation, with efforts ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
However, the Police condemned the killing, describing it as heinous, and assured residents that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
The Police Command also called on members of the public with useful information to assist ongoing investigations by coming forward or contacting the appropriate authorities.
Iringe-Koko, reaffirmed the commitment of the police to keeping residents informed as investigations progress.
