The Rector of Ogun State Polytechnic of Health and Allied Sciences, Ilese-Ijebu, Dr. Rasaki Akinbo, has warned newly admitted students of the institution to adhere strictly to its rules and steer clear of cultism, examination malpractice and drug abuse, among other vices capable of truncating their academic journey.

Dr. Akinbo handed down the warning during the institution’s 20th matriculation ceremony, where 3,047 students were formally admitted into the polytechnic’s academic fold, according to a statement made available to journalists on Friday.

The Rector made clear that the institution maintains zero tolerance for misconduct, stressing that discipline and integrity remain the bedrock of academic success.

He said: “The polytechnic has zero tolerance for examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, harassment and all forms of indiscipline.

“I strongly advise you to familiarise yourselves with the rules and regulations contained in the Students’ Handbook.

“Your stay here must be defined by responsibility, focus and good character.”

Dr. Akinbo emphasised that matriculation is not merely a ceremonial exercise but a formal induction into a community of scholars and future professionals in healthcare, science and technology, adding that gaining admission into the institution was a testament to the students’ resilience, hard work and determination.

You competed with many others and emerged successful. You should be proud of this achievement, but remember that it is only the beginning.

“As you take the matriculation oath, let it reflect your personal commitment to academic excellence, ethical conduct and sincere pursuit of knowledge,” he said.

He reiterated that academic excellence must be complemented by integrity, professionalism and service, noting that the polytechnic was established to produce highly skilled, competent and compassionate professionals who would contribute meaningfully to societal development.

He assured the students of the institution’s commitment to aligning its programmes with regulatory standards and global best practices, to ensure that its graduates are not only employable but also capable of becoming job creators and leaders in their respective fields.

The Rector encouraged the students to make effective use of available academic resources, including the library, laboratories and health facilities, while attending lectures regularly and engaging actively in research and practical sessions.

He also noted that the Directorate of Students’ Affairs remains open to address students’ concerns promptly.

Dr. Akinbo expressed appreciation to Governor Dapo Abiodun for his contributions to the growth and development of the institution.

In his remarks, the Ogun State Coordinator of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Mr. Abdulhammid Akeem, urged the students to take full advantage of the opportunity before them and remain committed to achieving excellence in their academic pursuits.
