Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has officially declared the Ondo South senatorial seat vacant.
He made the announcement during plenary on Tuesday, noting the the development followed the recent appointment of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, which effectively ended his tenure in the Senate.
Akpabio stated that the vacancy takes immediate effect, in line with constitutional provisions guiding such transitions.
He noted that the Senate had no option but to formally declare the seat vacant to enable the replacement process to begin.
The Senate President also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a by-election within the next 30 days to fill the vacant position.
In addition, he instructed the Clerk to the National Assembly to formally communicate the Senate’s resolution to INEC to ensure swift action and prevent any delay in representation for the people of Ondo South.
