The Nigeria Police Council has confirmed the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, disclosed this in a statement issued after the council’s meeting on Monday

He said the confirmation clears the way for Disu’s formal swearing-in by Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday.

According to Onanuga, the ceremony will take place during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting scheduled for the same day.

President Tinubu had earlier, on February 24, appointed Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

The council met at the State House and unanimously confirmed the appointment.

The meeting was presided over by President Tinubu and attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, in line with constitutional provisions.

Other attendees included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam; the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; and the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Esther Didi Walson-Jack.

During deliberations, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised Disu’s exemplary service, particularly his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, where he earned recognition for effective crime control.

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule also commended the appointment, describing it as merit based.

Wike lauded Disu’s professionalism, recalling his service in Rivers State as Assistant Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, and Officer-in-Charge of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit between 2014 and 2015, as well as his later role as Commissioner of Police in the FCT Command.

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent.

He has held several key operational and strategic positions nationwide, most recently serving as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force CID Annex, Lagos.
